After Rock On 2 and Force 2 failed to make it at the box office with demonetisation playing a spoilsport, Kahaani 2 starring Vidya Balan released on Friday. Being sold as a taut thriller, the Sujoy Ghosh film comes a week after Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Dear Zindagi which managed to earn Rs 47 crore in one week.
Kahaani 2 is the second installment in the Kahaani film series. The huge success of its first installment had generated a lot of hype and expectations around the second installment. The makers have had massive promotion for the film. But the hype and publicity did not translate into big bucks, as the movie recorded poor advance booking for its opening day.
Kahaani opened average at the BO with theatres witnessing 15-20% occupancy in the morning shows across India. Kolkata, where the film is set, gave a much better reception to the film with occupancy ranging between 40 to 50 per cent on day one. From now on, the film’s performance will depend on the word of mouth and reviews as the Kahaani franchise already enjoys a lot of popularity.
The audience, who watched Kahaani 2 in the first show, say that the movie boasts of a thrilling and intriguing script, brilliant performances by Vidya Balan and Arjun Rampal and good production values. The word of mouth will help the movie go on from strength to strength over the weekend. The film will beat the record of Kahaani, which collected Rs 13.83 crore at the Indian box office in the first weekend.
